the surrender stated sadly

today was the day
the last day of the war
for General Lee has surrendered
we don't have to fight no more

hour by hour a minute from death
second by second the battles raged
now I'm heading home
my slaves will soon be losing their chains

confederacy is gone
time to say goodbye
the south has lost
a united union returns barely alive
