the surrender stated sadly

today was the day
the last day of the war
for General Lee has surrendered
we don't have to fight no more

hour by hour a minute from death
second by second the battles raged
now I'm heading home
my slaves will soon be losing their chains

confederacy is gone
time to say goodbye
the south has lost
a united union returns barely alive

today was the day
the last day of the war
for General Lee has surrendered
we don't have to fight no more

Newspaper article Zoe kist

2 days ago on April 9th general robert E lee surrendered to general Ulysses s grant in the home of Willmore McLean in the town of Appomattox. This happened after the final battle at saylors creek with 10780 union casualties and 6000 southern casualties plus many more captured. The term as of the surrender said all cSA weaponry and flags must be confiscated, the south gets 25000 rations, personal weapons and horses  may be kept, and no more fighting. This is the end of the civil war now we must work to unite our country once again.

1865 Blog Appomattox Poem

April the second of 1865
A day in history that our minds will archive.
When Richmond left the Confederate's grasp
The Union seized victory at last.
The US had been ripped apart
the scraps left smoldering
in Lincoln's tired heart.
Richmond was ablaze in flames
a fire that left nothing to remain.
Saylor's creek on the 6th
broke Lee's army like it was a stick
thin and tired
been through too much
hesitant about the reality of giving up.
The pain of surrender stabbed Lee's heart
a pain more excruciating than a "thousand" departs.
He somberly marched to surrender the fight
April the ninth of 1865.
Terms were discussed at Appomatox
to sew and mend the US's fabric.
The seams were slashed and it's thread was frayed,
but it would be restored to how it was made.
Before the war
before the bloodshed
back to one country
once again.

Appomattox
The feel of the pen fresh in memory
Last thing I wrote was General Lee
Dragging myself upon my horse
I did not believe this was the course
Up to Appomattox again I would return
The conqueror not the southern
The path no space lacking colored bodies
Last time I believed I would feel was that cold breeze
Seeing the same house yet again
Dressed as nicely as a coachmen
I would rather die a thousand deaths

There I breathed my last confederate breaths

Sherman is a union general who wanted to end  the war by taking out a major southern city

Havoc he wreaked through southern streets to destroy the confederate core

Eeek! Shrieked the south horrified by the north’s ferocious ways

Rapidly Yankees filled the streets of Atlanta with confidence and valor

Meanwhile southern eyes reflected panic and dismay

Atlanta streets cry with rivers of tears at the destruction of what once was there home

No one will ever be the same the day Sherman’s March came to town

I am Corporal William Matthews, and I have no opinion on slavery and I do not own any slaves but I am loyal to my hometown, Richmond, Virginia. As a southerner I do see we are more of an agricultural economy and we stand for the right to own slaves and we believe the government is nothing but tyrannical but we are not only fighting for our right but more so for the way of life of a southerner. This government can’t control our rules and regulations that we have practiced ever since the birth of this nation, the south has a monopoly on cotton over the whole entire nation bringing a total of millions of dollars to the economy. We will fight for our rights, our way of life, and for the Confederate States of America.
